National Industrial Hemp Variety Evaluation Trials (2018-2020)

Beginning in 2018, WCFA has cooperated with the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance (CHTA) on the National Industrial Hemp Variety Evaluation Trials. WCFA's trials for this project have been established at the WCFA Brazeau County Research Site (NW 14-049-09-W5M). Each year a number of dual-purpose and grain type industrial hemp varieties are evaluated at a number of sites throughout the country.

Objectives

To determine the viability of hemp in the region including yield and quality on a number fo grain and dual-purpose type industrial hemp varieties. To demonstrate the feasibility of introducing hemp into rotations for local producers and provide opportunities for education on this emerging crop.

Trial Information

2019 Trial Summary

Twelve varieties were tested in 2019 at the Brazeau County Research Site.

Dual-purpose type varieties:

  • Altair
  • Anka
  • CRS-1
  • Petera
  • Silesia
  • Rigel

Grain type varieties:

  • Grandi
  • CRS-1
  • Katani
  • X59
  • CFX-2
  • Judy

Seeding was conducted on June 12, 2019 at the Brazeau County Research Site. Data was collected for seedling mortality, plant vigour, height, lodging, disease, male:female plant ratio, grain yield and fibre yield (for dual-purpose varieties only).

The 2019 trial experienced less than ideal climatic conditions for growing hemp. The high amounts of rainfall and cool temperatures experienced throughout June and July, as well as the rest of the growing season, significantly affected the growth and maturity of the plants. Data collected from the trial was highly variable.
